Rain stops play

It’s all go here. At least, it was until the very heavy shower that started five minutes ago and sent me scurrying inside.
It’s hard to scurry while wearing purple clogs, I can tell you.
I’ve had a very busy few days at work and I’m shattered, so rather than take the nap that my body [...]

Allotment and social life: an unsustainable combination?

Today we visited the plot for the first time in, ooh, well over a week and found that everything had gone crazy in the sun and rain. Well it would, wouldn’t it?
In spite of our very best intentions a combination of heavy work commitments, a weekend away in Nottingham and then giving into temptation [...]

Amphibians a-go-go

Following the joyous sighting of a wee small frog in our garden last week, we have since seen another two! Owen found the first yesterday, which jumped out at him in a panic as he was pulling leafy hairy rubbish out of the bathroom drain. At first, we thought it must be a [...]

Not a post about dog poo

It is with much excitement and not a little smugness that I can happily report two things. One, my Blauhilde purple french beans are flowering – shocking pink petals on deep violet snaking stems. Two, I harvested my first strawberry. Delish. And timely.

Normal service is resumed…

…and long may it continue.
Update: OK, this is more complicated than I thought. I know what the problem is and how to solve it, but it means us losing some useful info. Gah.
Update 2: Everything seems to be working fine now. Cross all your fingers!
To all of you who’ve been wondering about the [...]

And the heat goes on…

Yet another glorious day, but too darn hot for me to even think about working in the garden just yet. Maybe as the sun starts to sink a little.
Al has asked about – and others of you may have noticed – the infuriatingly regular appearance of bizarre error messages in the right hand margin [...]

Good day sunshine!

An absolutely beautiful day today, so I’m spending it working hard in the garden, but popping in every forty-five minutes or so to cool off!
Our next door neighbour has let me know that in two weeks’ time work will be starting on the bit of our boundary that is falling down and allows her dog [...]

Here lie three sisters

RIP.
Our trip down to our little site (why do I keep calling it little when it’s bloody enormous?) on Monday was disheartening. The frosts last week had killed off all but two of my sweetcorn plants and the three pumpkin plants I’d put into the triangular bed. The crispy pumpkin plants were not [...]

I’m certainly saving my thankses

Again, we’ve not visited the allotment for a wee while, though we hope to go this evening, sometime after the carpet man visits with his samples and tape measure. Fun, fun, fun.
I have been trying to do some work in the garden though which has been a bit neglected recently. Too much work [...]

Antipodean soup hunters

When I look at the referral stats for Pumpkin Soup over the last couple of months there is a very striking phenomenon. A large proportion of visitors have got here searching for ‘pumpkin’ and ’soup’ and ‘recipe’ via google.com.au or google.co.nz. It turns out that a lot of visitors from all over the [...]

Staff cuts

Another brief sojourn to the allotment this evening. We managed to finish cutting back the green manure on the patch that will very soon become the big pumpkin bed (that’s a big bed rather than somewhere where we intend to grow giant pumpkins capable of being magically transformed into deluxe carriages by my very [...]

Lit. land of Den

In spite of the ‘little and often’ allotment ethic we’re trying to cultivate, we’ve not visited our patch of weeds since last Monday. We had big plans for today, but have decided instead to have beer with friends while watching a spaghetti western on DVD – they’ll be here in a few minutes. [...]
