Aptly named seed

“SUNFLOWER, Pacino. Very showy dwarf variety for bedding.”
Who says seed catalogue compilers have no sense of humour?

There must be 50 ways to leave your lover, and…

Spiders are not the only beasties thriving on the summer we’ve had. The slugs are back covering everything with slimy goo. Or Gooey slime. Whichever – it’s everywhere (even on the living room carpet! What the…?).
I think I have already mentioned the utter joy I experienced when I found slug pellets [...]

It’s only paranoia if they’re not actually out to get you.

This summer’s hot and dry spell followed by warm and damp conditions have clearly been beneficial to weeds and wildlife. Like so many others we are overrun with Daddy Long Legs (legses?) and spiders.
If you’ve been to P’Soup before, you might remember that I’m pretty scared of spiders. Skin-crawlingly, stomach-wrenchingly, hyperventilatingly terrified, in fact. [...]

People who have made my day today (not)

Whoever comes up with the prices at Central Trains. Sadists.
The sleazeball who I think tried to take a photo up my skirt with his cameraphone as I walked up the stairs from the platform at Leicester station. Git. I spotted him and managed to move out of range, but wasn’t alert enough [...]

Surprisingly good.

You probably thought I was joking about the chocolate courgette loaf, didn’t you? Well, I wasn’t. I’ll admit that I had my doubts as it does seem a pretty disgusting combination, but I went ahead and made it anyway to feed to my friends and parents without having tried it myself first. [...]

2007 – the year I lose all my friends?

Garlic has been this year’s surprise vegetable-of-amazement. I chucked some in the ground last year to fill up some space and didn’t really think any more about it. We do like garlic a lot in this house, but when it was ready to pull and we started to roast it in the oven [...]

Now and then

It has been suggested by Mr Dirty Burro that it would be good to see how the P’Soup patch is looking at the moment. It’s true that I have been avoiding posting any pictures of the plot because I am just a little ashamed of how weedy and messy it looks. But I [...]

Stocking up

(which has nothing whatsoever to do with suspenders)
You have probably noticed a distinct lack of allotment-related posts here recently. There is a very good reason for this. Our visits to the plot are pretty same-y at the moment:

Visit allotment and roll our eyes at the overgrown weeds
Harvest excessive amounts of courgettes, french beans, [...]

National news as heard through sleepy ears

The news headlines were burbling away as I came to this morning and I was surprised to hear the following:
“The Government is calling for radical reform of the way footballers run.”
‘Funny’, I thought, ‘that sounds a bit like a Monty Python sketch. And surely the Government has more important things to concern itself with [...]

Countdown to the GBBP

I know, another non-allotment post. Sorry.
In just over a week our Great Big Bathroom Project begins. It’s something of a preoccupation at the moment as we have to clear out the room that is going to become the lovely new mould-free and non-turquoise bathroom. We also have to gird our loins for six weeks [...]

This much I know

Today’s weather: Terminator rain. It absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.
That might be an exaggeration.

Does exactly what it says on the tin.

This is the kind of remark I dread getting about my cooking and my blogging.
Do, please, feel free to let me know if you feel that your regular supply of Pumpkin Soup is ever too soupy. I will, in turn, feel free to completely ignore your feedback and make fun of your comments to [...]

Snapped!

I’ve finally got around to uploading photos from various jaunts onto Flickr. You may, or may not, like to take a look at the snaps from our musical weekend (heavily censored edited to protect those who looked foolish), my visit to my Mum in Ireland (lots of seaside pics), and our trip to Weymouth [...]

For goodness’ sakes, do you really have to click that mouse so loudly?

Last night we went to a party. We don’t get out much so this was a bit of an event for us. We went with good friends and met loads of brilliant people and generally had a wonderful time. Especially when after we had left and gone not home, but back to our [...]

Raise the song of harvest home!

When I was a child (yes, that long ago), my favourite hymns at school were the ones we sang for harvest festival – ‘We plough the fields and scatter’, ‘Come, ye thankful people, come’ and – well, can anyone remember any others? ‘Come, ye thankful people, come’ has some particularly nice chord progressions as [...]
