2007 – the year I lose all my friends?
Garlic has been this year’s surprise vegetable-of-amazement. I chucked some in the ground last year to fill up some space and didn’t really think any more about it. We do like garlic a lot in this house, but when it was ready to pull and we started to roast it in the oven we fell in love with it in ways we scarcely imagined. The only downside was that we didn’t grow nearly enough.
It’s not a mistake I intend to repeat.
The garlic lover’s pack I ordered from the Garlic Farm arrived this week, and I have started what I am sure will be a protracted process of planting the cloves. Early Purple Wight went in the ground today, but just look what else I will be growing.
This means that next year we should have enough fresh, wet garlic for three months’ worth of roasting as well as garlic for pickling, garlic for drying and even some elephant garlic. It’s going to be garlic with everything.
And no-one is going to want to sit next to me on the train, are they?

Don’t worry – I’m also investing in a bunch of gas masks so that pals won’t pass out when they’re near us.
