Because a bar of chocolate on its own is just not decadent enough

Chocolate fountain

As well as having exciting musical events this weekend – marred only slightly by the worry engendered by our bassoonist arriving 24 hours later than we were expecting him (does that still count as fashionably late?) – we also took our chocolate fountain out for its maiden voyage.

1250g (yes, really – over a kilo) of gorgeous Green and Black’s milk chocolate with cream and cognac stirred in. Into this delicious concoction we dipped marshmallows, double chocolate brownies (I’m hardcore when it comes to chocolate) as well as bananas and orange segments for the health-conscious among us. You might be able to tell from the picture that our chocolate is not really as runny as perhaps it should have been. That’s because I balked at the instructions that suggested we add a whole cup of oil in order to thin the consistency.

Well, honestly. I’ve got to think about my poor arteries.

Back in Nov when I was Best Man (or was it Only Available Man) at my mate’s wedding they had a big 6ft tall one of these at the reception, complete with a scary beardy bloke to mind it. They had strawbs, marshmallows, bannana and stuff, but had foolishly sited it at the end of the buffet table….You guessed it….”later on” in the evening our mate, Hungry Colin, was asking whether we could distract Beardy long enough for him to dip a skewer with two sausage rolls, a chicken drumstick, and mini pizza slice in the choccy. Sadly I fear Beardy must get this all the time, hence his mandatory prescence, as “Operation Cardiac” quickly was rumbled.

I was at a huge Indian wedding last year and they unpacked a 6 footer there. I decided against trying it after I saw them fill it with chocolate in already liquid form – tubs and tubs of it. Not a pretty sight.

We’ve got given one for Christmas, but we’ve yet to have a go – it’s a bit too big for just the two of us and the fondue does the same job. More cream also makes the mixture runnier and if you’re having half a ton of chocolate an extra dollop of cream won’t hurt, honest. Cointreau is amazing in the mixture too. Oh, and pears are the best thing to stick in the mixture along with doughnuts and cornflake chrispy things.

    God, I’m hungry now.
