Tomorrow is my gardening assistant’s birthday. A day we are going to fill by opening gifts, having a boozy lunch, taking delivery of a skip (what a fabulous present!), cooking for friends, and enjoying cake and home-made ice-cream.
Because enjoying ice-cream is something we do so rarely in this house.

One of the best things about birthdays is receiving mail that comes in brightly coloured envelopes with the address hand-written, and not printed and displayed through a plastic window. Hurrah!
I’m going to enjoy today, I think, and see if I can’t extend the celebrations across the weekend
