Left to its own devices
Life has been very busy here for the past few weeks. This is partly because we have been making preparations for a trip we’re taking today to Barcelona. This will be mostly work rather than pleasure, but I expect there will be some fun thrown in too.

I’ve taken steps to ensure that the potager is OK while we’re away, but there are still some things I haven’t done that I’m a little worried about. My strawberries are not netted (netted they are not – try saying that after a cerveza or two!), but hopefully are still just far enough away from ripening that the birds won’t be attracted to them. I’ve pinched out the growing tips of my broad beans, but wonder how long it takes for blackfly to decide to infest.
I’m sure that the local slug population will by now have got the memo saying that we’re away. Somewhere in a bunker in Kings Heath they are planning their strategy of annihilation. If you hear a blood-curdling scream in your part of the world at some point after the weekend, don’t worry. It’ll just be me discovering that my garden has been transformed into green stumps covered in slime.
Ah well, nothing for it but to kick off my shoes and soak up some culture. I’ll post if I can while I’m away, but don’t expect miracles…
