The verdict

Some time ago I posted about my attempts to make pickled garlic. At the time I was unable to say whether the recipe I used was up to scratch because the jars of said garlic had to cure for at least three weeks before being eaten. That was some time ago now and I can now give you the results of our copious taste testing.

The pickled garlic cloves are crisp and delicious. They are nice nibbled as an aperitif, but are also good served with salad or maybe chopped into pieces and sprinkled in among your favourite selection of green leaves. I have to say , though, that I am a little disappointed with the recipe. Don’t get me wrong, it is delicious, but it’s not quite the pickled garlic experience I have had before. Usually I can eat an entire jar of the stuff in one sitting, but not this. It’s too vinegar-y. The sharpness is nice, but I like something a little sweeter so I think I need to add some sugar to the recipe. Or how about honey? Hmmmn.

Looks like I’ll be experimenting again next year.

I think I’d try regular sugar first before experimenting with honey. Glad they were delicious anyway. Keep on experimenting until you’re happy. :)

Hi Anthony (with the ducks in your swinmming pool – you say you’re not that Anthony but I won’t take any chances if you don’t mind). Don’t worry, I also thought it would be best to start with sugar and if I did add honey it would only be a very small amount I think. Who knows how I’ll feel by next June anyway?

I picked beetroot last year, and when I came to eat it, my taste buds nearly blew up! They were like pure vinegar, but in solid form…..! Argh! Spoke to someone and he said sugar/honey….which is all well and good, but why don’t Sarsons do that in a jar….happy pickling! cat x

Hi Cat! I wouldn’t mind but the recipe I used was a combined version of various recipes I’ve seen, none of which use sugar. Got a great picture in my mind of your tastebuds blowing up!
