Storing garlic

It’s a total faff. First, you have to dry the garlic with all its leaves attached taking up laods of room and – in a summer like this one – stinking out the utility room because it’s so bloody wet outside. Then there’s the actual wrestling the bulbs and stems in a french braid technique, something I find easier to do to my hair than to vegetables.

But it’s worth it. I love hanging garlic and onions in this way (no onions for us this year – that’s a story for another time). Aside from making our kitchen look rustic, the plaits make great gifts. Because there’s only so much garlic in one year that even we can use.

I like that homey rustic look, too. You are smart to grow your own. Also enjoyed reading about your pickling garlic results. I had never heard of pickled garlic, I bet our sons-in-law would love that. I’ll file that idea for later.

Barbee – Hi! The pickled garlic is very good, but my recipe still needs some work. I’ve found some different recipes to try next year…

Hi Dad! Don’t worry, I’m sure we can rustle something up from the garden for you.

Hi Soilman – Ah, well. Foxes. They stomped all over my onions and leeks. Next year I’m going othave to find a way of protecting the two specific beds that seem to form the fox highway!
