Further squirrel incursions

Looking out the bathroom window this week after a shower I spotted this:

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised really, they are notorious for it after all.

You can’t help but be impressed by the virtuoso show of athleticism.

But I don’t suppose there’s any chance they’ll leave some for the birds, is there?

And I’ll bet he [...]

What has a hazelnut in every bite?

Those of us who were brought up in the seventies will remember a certain chocolate bar with a jingle that asked this very question. In playgrounds the country over, the reply (Topic!) was replaced with a far less palatable -but funnier – alternative line (Squirrel sh*t!). Remember that?
I bring this up because the [...]

Raiding the larder

Every time I dig over a new bed in the garden, I uncover one or two shiny new conkers, buried in the soil.

I think there might be some rather irritated – and hungry – squirrels in the neighbourhood this winter.
That said, by this morning these two conkers that I dug up yesterday had disappeared from [...]

Arachnophobia

Or, In Kings Heath no-one can hear you scream!
Or, Revenge of the homeless web-spinners!
I have a difficult relationship with spiders. I am terrified of them. It’s irrational, I know. They just want to be left alone to munch insects in peace and would far prefer it if I wasn’t clumping around nearly treading [...]

More wildlife surprises

As well as rodent drama, the garden refurb also unearthed a couple of frogs.

This chap was living behind the same compost bin that was home to the Brum Family Mouse. He hopped away somewhere shady and cool when I removed his hiding nook. Clearly I am a heartless wildlife home-wrecker.
This slightly smaller, [...]

Mouse glut – the rodent drama continues

Work on the potager project began in earnest today. As part of this, I had to dismantle one of my compost bins so it could be moved. The top was filled with only partially decomposed matter and was a bit twiggy, so I shovelled it all out into the wheelbarrow to go into [...]

There must be 50 ways to leave your lover, and…

Spiders are not the only beasties thriving on the summer we’ve had. The slugs are back covering everything with slimy goo. Or Gooey slime. Whichever – it’s everywhere (even on the living room carpet! What the…?).
I think I have already mentioned the utter joy I experienced when I found slug pellets [...]

It’s only paranoia if they’re not actually out to get you.

This summer’s hot and dry spell followed by warm and damp conditions have clearly been beneficial to weeds and wildlife. Like so many others we are overrun with Daddy Long Legs (legses?) and spiders.
If you’ve been to P’Soup before, you might remember that I’m pretty scared of spiders. Skin-crawlingly, stomach-wrenchingly, hyperventilatingly terrified, in fact. [...]
